June 2026 was the second-warmest June in analyses of global weather data going back to 1850, only 0.09 degree Celsius (0.16°F) below the 2024 record, NOAA’s <a href=”https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>National Centers for Environmental Information, or NCEI, reported July 9. <a href=”https://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/tabledata_v4/GLB.Ts+dSST.txt” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>NASA and the European <a href=”https://climate.copernicus.eu/surface-air-temperature-june-2026″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Copernicus Climate Change Service also rated June 2026 as the second-warmest June. The global-average temperature for January-June 2026 was the third-highest on record, NOAA said.

<figure class=”wp-block-image size-full”><img src=”https://yaleclimateconnections.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/jun-2026-temps.png” alt=”A map showing that most of the globe was much above average temperature in July.” class=”wp-image-140081″ />
Figure 1. Departure of temperature from average for June 2026, the world’s second-warmest June since record-keeping began in 1850. Record-high June temperatures were shattered across the eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean, as well as portions of Canada, northern South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and across parts of every major ocean basin. Record-cold June temperatures were not observed anywhere. (Image credit: <a href=”https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>NOAA/NCEI)

Across all 2,118 months in the historical record since January 1850, June 2026 tied with July 2023 for the seventh-highest departure of global ocean temperature from average. Meanwhile, global land surface temperatures ranked as the fourth warmest on record for the month. North America, Europe (tied), and Africa each experienced their second-warmest June on record. Oceania experienced its third-warmest June on record and Asia recorded its fourth warmest. While South America also observed an above-average June temperature, it did not rank among the ten warmest Junes.

According to NCEI’s statistical analysis, there is about a 95% chance that 2026 will rank among the four warmest years on record. This statistics-based product is not designed to explicitly take El Niño or La Niña events into account, so with a global-atmosphere-warming El Niño event about to unfold, the odds are likely considerably higher.

Wednesday El Niño update – Sea surface temperature anomalies have jumped a bit in the last few days in the important Niño region 3.4 (record high). The warm pool is also extending pretty far east already! Conditions look favorable for more strengthening in the near-term.Data from NOAA OISSTv2.1. 🌊

NOAA expects a very strong “super” El Niño event

An El Niño advisory continues in the Eastern Pacific, NOAA reported in its July 9 monthly discussion of the state of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. NOAA predicts with the highest possible confidence that El Niño conditions will continue through February 2027 (100% chance). Weekly average sea surface temperatures in the benchmark Niño 3.4 region are currently at 1.2°C above average, above the 1.0°C threshold for a moderate El Niño event. The threshold for a strong event is 1.5°C above average, and 2.0°C for a very strong (colloquially dubbed a “super”) event.

According to official probabilities from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center issued June 22, the August-September-October peak of hurricane season has a 100% chance of El Niño. NOAA is giving a 48% chance of very strong El Niño conditions being in place during peak hurricane season and an 81% chance for the October-December period. El Niño conditions tend to suppress Atlantic hurricane activity through an increase in wind shear.

Arctic sea ice: third-lowest June extent on record

According to the <a href=”http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>National Snow and Ice Data Center, Arctic sea ice extent during June 2026 was the third-lowest in the 48-year satellite record, behind only 2016 and 2025. The Arctic experienced its warmest June on record at 2.22°C (4.00°F) above average, eclipsing the previous 2012 record by 0.26°C (0.47°F). Additionally, this was the first time the Arctic saw a June temperature departure of 2.0°C (3.6°F) or greater. Notably, the Arctic’s 10 warmest Junes have all occurred since 2012. So far in July, Arctic sea ice extent has been running slightly lower than in 2012, which set the all-time record for lowest seasonal extent in September.

<a href=”https://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Antarctic sea ice extent in June 2026 was the sixth-lowest on record. Below-average temperatures covered much of Antarctica, resulting in its coolest June since 2021.

This does not have as many of the records as the map, BUT does show how much hotter these #European records were compared to the previous June records. In some cases a 2C which is a huge margin. And you can't blame it on urbanization. Europe cities have been heavily urbanized for years.(IMG source?)

Major weather stations in June: 395 all-time heat records, no all-time cold records

Among global stations with a record of at least 40 years, an astonishing 395 set, not just tied, an all-time heat record in June. All but one of these records were set in Europe from June 22-30. No stations set an all-time cold record.

Perhaps more extraordinary than the record high temperatures set during Europe’s heat wave was the extreme humidity that accompanied it, which helped allow new all-time national records for highest minimum temperature to be set in every country in Europe except Italy and Greece, according to Herrera. The humid heat increased heat stress and led to a death toll in the thousands, according to multiple sources (see Tweet below). Herrera’s nomination for craziest record set in Europe was the 40.4°C (104.7°F) at Pinsk on June 29, which set a new all-time heat record for Belarus. Herrera commented:

Just think this:
All time record at Pinsk was 36.3°C in August 1905
‼️It took 121 years but it got smashed by 4.1°C
INSANE
