DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 200 AM PDT (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Gilma was located near latitude 16.6 North, longitude 124.2 West. Gilma is moving toward the west-northwest near 6 mph (9 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue during the next several days. Satellite images indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Gilma is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is possible today, and Gilma is likely to remain a powerful hurricane for the next couple of days. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 963 mb (28.44 inches).
