DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Gilma was located near latitude 18.5 North, longitude 140.7 West. Gilma is moving toward the west near 13 mph (20 km/h). A slightly faster westward to west-northwestward motion is expected for the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Rapid weakening is expected today, with steady weakening continuing after that. Gilma is forecast to weaken to a remnant low by Thursday night. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 990 mb (29.24 inches).
