Features Editor, Yale Climate Connections
Salary range: $65,000-$75,000/year
Location: New Haven, CT, or remote; candidates residing in these U.S. states will be considered
Reports to: Editor-in-Chief
We’re looking for a skilled editor who will work closely with our team of freelance reporters to tell stories about the impacts of extreme weather and how people are responding to the climate challenge.
Through our website and national radio program, which airs on weekdays on hundreds of stations, we reach millions of U.S. residents each year.
Staffed by professional journalists and radio producers, Yale Climate Connections is independent and nonpartisan. We seek a diversity of voices across our editorial team, reporters, and sources, and we see inclusion of these voices as essential to success.
If you were working as a features editor with Yale Climate Connections this week, here are some of the tasks that would have crossed your desk:
- Copy editing a breaking news story about an unprecedented heat wave
- Calling a freelance writer to discuss revisions to her story about new scientific research in the Arctic
- Editing a story on the impact of heat waves on pregnancy and a profile of a scientist who is optimistic about solving climate change
- Calling sources for a story you’re writing about sea level rise
- Assigning a story to a freelancer for our new Spanish-language section
- Participating in a team-wide meeting to assess progress on incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion in our work
You’re an ideal candidate if you take pleasure in coaching reporters as they refine pitches, revise drafts, and grow as writers. You have high standards, good people skills, and a knack for working collaboratively with writers to bring out their best.
Required education and experience
We’re looking for someone with experience in journalism, including experience as an editor. A candidate for this role will also be fluent in Spanish and/or have demonstrated cultural competence in covering Hispanic communities in the United States. Preferred education and experience
We’re particularly excited about candidates who have experience reporting or editing stories about climate change or a similar topic. Experience working in digital media and familiarity with or interest in solutions journalism are also pluses.
