As water temperatures climb along the beaches and passes of Naples and Marco Island, shark fishing in Southwest Florida really starts to heat up. Late winter into spring brings a strong migration of blacktip, spinner, lemon, and bull sharks into the nearshore Gulf and along the coastal beaches.
Blacktip and spinner sharks are often the first to show in better numbers. These sharks cruise just outside the breakers and along bait schools, especially on calm, clear mornings. Lemon sharks begin to move through in better size classes as the water warms. They tend to favor slightly deeper edges, passes, and areas with stronger tidal movement. Fishing larger cut baits on the bottom with a sturdy circle hook and adequate leader is key. A slow outgoing tide around passes and channel edges has been particularly effective.
Bull sharks are present year-round but become more active in warming water. They’re powerful, aggressive fish that patrol deeper channels, river mouths, and nearshore structure. Fresh, oily cut bait deployed on the bottom with heavier tackle is the standard approach. Bulls are less leader-shy and will readily eat a well-presented bait in moving water.
For all shark species, using heavy spinning or conventional tackle, wire leaders, and non-offset circle hooks ensures safe, solid hookups and healthy releases. Most action occurs within a few miles of shore, making these trips accessible and exciting without long runs offshore.
With bait schools increasing and water clarity improving, the coming weeks should offer excellent opportunities for anglers looking for big pulls and high-energy fights.
