WHY IS IT THAT WE SEND AIR FORCE AND HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT ALL OVER THE ATLANTIC HURRICANE REGION BUT DO NOT USE THEM WITH A LANDFALLING STORM LIKE FAY HERE IN THE GOOD OLD USA? ALL DAY LONG, FAY'S STRENGTH AND POSITION WAS BASED ON " SATELLITE AND GROUND OBSERVATIONS" . WHY NOT BASED ON HURRICANE PLANES AS USED IN BERMUDA, WINDWARD AND LEELAND ISLANDS, HAITI, CUBA E
TC.? WHY DON'T WE USE ALL THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE ON DOMESTIC STORMS?

Does the recon planes really ever measure winds within, say, 25 meters of the surface? Or do they have to extrapolate the wind data they get to the surface? (I sincerely don't know the answer.) It seems like when you have land observation at or near the center, that's sufficient and more accurate than what 1500 or 3000 meter observations will give.

Wind speed is of course best observed where it means the most to us-on the ground. But the planes investigate the structure of the storm and can determine what's going on inside it and thus make predictions as to strengh, direction, etc. _________________ Sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
